I think about dwindling parishes, some bear the odds and strike a renewal, others just hurdle towards what seems endless sick calls and funerals.
I am extremely grateful that the older families and priests in mine that have stuck out years or decades of apathy and neglect wait for resurgence to come before they go home.
I'm not sure about #1, but this is definitely one of my favourite stories out of the magazine that I have yet read during my time as a subscriber. It is a sad fact that, as one of the other comments mentioned, most priests, at least in the Catholic and I know Orthodox, Churches do a lot more funerals than baptisms.
And it was depressing, but not without hope.
It seems implied that this is only one of a number of colony ships sent out, and one can certainly hope that others fared better. Hopefully we will reach for the stars in some way perhaps a lot like this, for the sake of our species' survival. But there can be little doubt that there will be terrible disasters and tragedies along the way. We have already had some, and I can only ask you to thank whatever God you believe in that it hasn't stopped us from continuing.
And whenever that ship launched, they still played basketball!

Thank you for this story it is good to reflect on
Depressing, but fascinating! Great read.

Very right provoking ending. Very melancholy feeling throughout
