What I am really talking about in my case is a situation where most of the superstitions that still survive despite the Orthodox Church's best efforts, are just that, superstitions. But here and there you run across something that makes the characters (and the reader) have to ask themselves the question of , 'Hey, wait a second - did that actually WORK?'
