When forgiveness is systematized, what space is left for grace?

The building had three names depending on which door you used.

If you came through the east entrance, under the limestone arch where the gargoyles had been replaced in 2031 with solar-paneled security cameras shaped like gargoyles, you were entering the Bartow County Justice Center. If you came through the west doors, the ones with the stained glass depicting either the Beatitudes or the county seal depending on the hour and the angle of the sun, you were entering the Cathedral of the Ascension. And if you came through the south door, the one with the hand sanitizer dispenser and the sign that read ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST CHECK IN BY 8:45 AM, you were entering the Bartow County Accountability and Recovery Court, known colloquially as ARC.

All three doors led to the same building.

Dale Reeves knew this because he had entered through all three, at various times, for various reasons, and sometimes for reasons that blurred so completely he could no longer tell which threshold he had crossed.

He was forty years old. He had a lean, weathered face that looked honest even when he wasn’t being honest, which had been both a gift and a curse across the span of his drinking years. He had two daughters who lived with their mother in Adairsville. He had a commercial driver’s license that had been suspended so many times it might as well have been printed on tissue paper. And he had four DUI convictions in Bartow County, Georgia, the last of which had been pled down from a felony only because Judge Anniston believed, or claimed to believe, that Dale Reeves was a man capable of change.

That was the word Judge Anniston used. Capable. Not reformed. Not recovered. Capable. Like a firearm.

Dale sat in the south-door waiting room on a Tuesday morning in October, watching the intake coordinator, Keisha Mobley, tap her tablet. The chairs were the same hard oak pews the cathedral used on Sundays. Someone had fitted them with thin cushions the color of pencil erasers. The cushions did not help.

“Mr. Reeves, you’ve been reassigned.”

“Reassigned from what to what?”

“From standard compliance track to the Sacramental Accountability Program.” Keisha looked at him over the rim of her glasses. “Judge Anniston signed the order this morning.”

“I don’t know what that is.”

“It’s new. It started in August. You’d be in the second cohort.”

“What does it involve?”

Keisha turned the tablet around so he could see the screen. There was a flowchart. At the top it said BARTOW COUNTY ARC: SACRAMENTAL ACCOUNTABILITY PATHWAY. Below it were boxes connected by arrows. Dale recognized some of the boxes: SUBSTANCE USE ASSESSMENT. CASE MANAGEMENT. RANDOM DRUG SCREENING. GROUP THERAPY (TUESDAYS/THURSDAYS). But there were new boxes too, ones he had never seen on a court flowchart. WEEKLY CONFESSION (FACILITATED). SPIRITUAL INVENTORY. MORAL RESTITUTION PLAN. And at the very bottom, in a box outlined in red: BIOMETRIC REPENTANCE MONITORING (BRM).

Dale stared at the red box.

“What is that?”

“The booth has sensors,” Keisha said. “Heart rate, galvanic skin response, vocal stress analysis. It’s an AI system called GRACE. It doesn’t record what you say. It just, you know.” She made a vague gesture with her hand. “It reads whether you mean it.”

Dale looked at her for a long time.

“Whether I mean what?”

“Whatever you say in there. Whether you mean it.”

The program had its origins in a 2029 state law called the Georgia Faith and Restoration Act, which allowed counties to integrate religious institutions into treatment court operations provided that participation was, in the statutory language, “voluntary, non-coercive, and denominationally neutral.” In practice, this meant that Bartow County, which had been trying to figure out what to do with its crumbling Gothic municipal complex for thirty years, could finally merge the courthouse, the cathedral, and the treatment court into a single campus and call it innovation.

The cathedral had been dying for a decade. Its congregation had dwindled to a few dozen elderly parishioners and a priest, Father Paul Xanthos, who had come to Cartersville from a parish in Savannah and who seemed to regard the merger with the same quiet, unreadable expression he gave to everything: a man watching weather he could not control.

Father Paul was fifty-eight. He was short, broad, and had the kind of stillness about him that made people speak more carefully in his presence. He had been a Navy chaplain, a hospital chaplain, and, briefly, a graduate student in philosophy at Emory before deciding that thinking about God was less useful than sitting with people who needed God, which was everyone, though most did not know it.

He had agreed to participate in the Sacramental Accountability Program on one condition: the seal of confession was inviolable. What was said in the booth stayed in the booth. The court could monitor whatever biometric data it wanted from outside the conversation, but the words themselves belonged to God alone.

He had also corrected a misunderstanding the county kept making. What he offered most of the people the court sent him was not the sacrament of Penance in the strict sense. That, by the discipline of his church, belonged to the baptized Catholic faithful, and almost none of the participants were that. He could not pronounce absolution over a man like Dale Reeves.

But he had told the committee he would sit with anyone, of any faith or none, and hold whatever they said under the same seal, with the same gravity he gave the sacrament proper. To the county the distinction was a formality. To Father Paul it was everything.

Judge Anniston had agreed to this. The AI system, GRACE, had been designed to accommodate it. GRACE did not record audio. It recorded only physiological data: pulse, skin conductance, respiratory rate, micro-tremors in the voice. From these it generated what the developers called a Sincerity Index, a number between zero and one hundred that purported to measure the degree to which a participant’s confessional engagement was, in the technical language of the user manual, “authentic and indicative of genuine moral reckoning.”

A score below forty triggered a flag in the participant’s file. Three flags in a row triggered a compliance review. A compliance review could lead to revocation of the participant’s plea agreement and reinstatement of the original felony charge.

Grace was mercy with a threshold.

Dale’s first confession in the booth was on a Thursday afternoon. The booth had been the cathedral’s original confessional, a dark wooden enclosure carved with grape vines and crosses, but it had been retrofitted. The kneeler now contained a pressure sensor. The armrest had a small, almost invisible galvanic pad where your palm was supposed to rest. And somewhere above, in the latticed screen that separated penitent from priest, there was a microphone that did not record words but listened to the music of the voice, its tremors, its catches, its lies.

Father Paul was on the other side. Dale could see the outline of his profile through the screen.

“I don’t know what I’m supposed to say,” Dale said.

“You’re not supposed to say anything. You can say whatever you want.”

“Keisha said I have to confess.”

“Keisha is describing the program. I’m describing something older. They are not the same thing, even if they happen in the same room.”

“Aren’t you supposed to forgive me? Isn’t that how this works?”

“That depends what you mean. There’s a sacrament that ends with absolution — I absolve you, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. But those words belong to the Catholic faithful, and your file says you’re not one of them. I can’t pronounce them over you. Not the way my church means them.”

“Then what’s the point?”

“The point is I’ll listen the same way. I’ll hold what you say the same way. Whether or not I’m allowed to close it with the old words, I’ll treat it like your soul depends on it. Because I think it might.”

Dale was quiet for a moment. He could feel the galvanic pad under his palm, slightly cool, slightly adhesive. He wondered what his skin was telling it.

“I’ve been to AA,” Dale said. “I’ve done the fourth step. The moral inventory. I’ve done it twice, actually. Once sober and once, honestly, about half drunk, which probably doesn’t count.”

“What did you find?”

“Same thing both times. That I’m selfish. That I drink because I’m selfish and I’m selfish because I drink, and I can’t figure out which one came first.”

“That sounds like something you’ve said before. To a counselor, maybe. Or a group.”

Dale almost smiled. “You can tell?”

“I’ve been listening to people for thirty years. You don’t need a machine to know when someone is reciting instead of speaking.”

Dale felt something shift in his chest. It was a small thing, like a key turning in a lock he had forgotten was there.

“My youngest daughter, Clara, she’s eleven. Last Christmas I was supposed to pick her up. I told her mother I’d been sober for sixty days, which was true. I drove to Adairsville and I was sober when I got in the truck, and I was sober when I stopped at the gas station, and I was sober when I looked at the beer cooler, and then I wasn’t anymore. I didn’t pick her up. I sat in the parking lot of a Chevron station and drank a twelve-pack of Bud Light and then I drove home. I drove home drunk. On Christmas. And Clara called me at nine o’clock that night and I didn’t answer because I was passed out on my kitchen floor.”

He stopped.

“That’s not in my court file,” he said. “That’s not one of the four DUIs. I didn’t get caught that time. I just, I got home.”

Father Paul was silent for a long time.

“Why are you telling me this?”

“Because you asked what I found. In the inventory. That’s what I found. Not that I’m selfish. That I’m a coward. That I’m so afraid of being seen by my own daughter that I’d rather drink myself unconscious than stand in front of her and be ordinary.”

The booth was quiet. Dale could hear the hum of something electronic, faint, somewhere above him. GRACE, doing its work. Measuring the catch in his voice. Logging the sweat on his palm.

“Does the machine know I meant that?” Dale asked.

“I don’t know what the machine knows,” Father Paul said. “But I heard you. And God heard you. And that is sufficient.”

Dale’s Sincerity Index for that first session was seventy-three. He knew this because Keisha told him at his next check-in, which was the following Monday.

“Seventy-three is good,” she said. “Anything above sixty is considered compliant. You’re in good shape.”

“What does seventy-three mean, exactly?”

“It means the system detected a high degree of physiological consistency with genuine emotional disclosure. Basically, your body language matched what you were feeling.”

“But it doesn’t know what I said.”

“No. It just knows how you said it. The stress patterns, the heart rate variability. It’s like a polygraph, but more sophisticated. And less adversarial. It’s designed to encourage honesty, not catch lies.”

Dale thought about Clara. About the Chevron station. About the twelve-pack of Bud Light and the kitchen floor and the phone ringing at nine o’clock. He had told Father Paul the truest thing he had ever told anyone, and the machine had given it a seventy-three.

Not an eighty. Not a ninety. Seventy-three.

What was the missing twenty-seven percent? What part of his confession had the machine found wanting? Was it the moment when he hesitated before saying “coward,” the half-second where his pulse probably spiked because the word felt like a fishhook in his throat? Was it the fact that his palms were dry at the start, because he’d been nervous and his body had clamped down before it opened up? Was it some algorithm’s idea of what repentance was supposed to look like, physiologically, and his body had not performed it correctly?

He thought about this for the rest of the day. He thought about it while he sat in group therapy, which was held in the cathedral’s former parish hall, now rechristened the Recovery and Wellness Suite. He thought about it while Marcus, who was in the program for meth possession, talked about his mother dying. He thought about it while a young woman named Dana, who was in the program for prescription fraud, said she had been clean for ninety days and started crying, and everyone clapped. He thought about it while the group facilitator, a licensed clinical social worker named Terri Blount, asked him if he wanted to share, and he said no, not today.

He was thinking about the twenty-seven percent.

He was thinking: if the truest thing I’ve ever said is only worth seventy-three, what would I have to say to reach a hundred? And would a hundred even mean anything? Or would it just mean that my body had performed the right theater of contrition, the correct tremor, the optimal sweat?

The second confession was harder.

Dale came into the booth the following Thursday and sat down and put his palm on the galvanic pad and said nothing for a long time.

“I’ve been thinking about the score,” he said finally.

“What score?” Father Paul asked.

“The Sincerity Index. The number the machine gives. Last week I got a seventy-three.”

“I don’t see those numbers, Dale. I asked them not to show me.”

“You did?”

“If I knew the number, I would start listening differently. I would start listening for what the machine was listening for. And then I would not be a priest anymore. I would be an instrument.”

Dale let that word sit in the air. Instrument.

“The thing is,” Dale said, “I was honest last week. I told you something I’ve never told anyone. And the machine said I was seventy-three percent sincere. So now I’m sitting here and I’m thinking, okay, what do I have to do to get a higher score? And I’m thinking about my breathing and my heart rate and whether I should cry, and I realize that I’m not thinking about God or my daughter or what I’ve done. I’m thinking about the number. I’m performing.”

“Then stop performing.”

“I can’t. That’s the problem. Once you know the camera is there, you can’t un-know it. Once you know someone is measuring your repentance, every feeling becomes a calculation. Am I sorry enough? Is my sorrow the right shape? Does it register?”

Father Paul was quiet.

“I had a parishioner once,” he said, “years ago, in Savannah. She was dying. Lung cancer. She came to confession every week, and every week she confessed the same thing: that she was angry at God. And every week I told her the same thing: that anger at God is still a relationship with God. That the opposite of faith is not doubt; it is indifference.”

“What happened to her?”

“She died. And the last time she came to confession, the very last time, she didn’t confess anything. She just sat in the booth and breathed. She didn’t say a word. And when she left, she said, ‘That was the best one.’ I think about that a lot. That sometimes the most honest confession is silence.”

Dale looked up at the latticed screen where the microphone was hidden.

“The machine would give silence a zero,” he said.

“The machine measures what it can measure. It cannot measure grace.”

“But the court doesn’t care about grace. The court cares about compliance.”

Father Paul did not answer. Dale heard him shift on the other side of the screen. When he spoke again, his voice was different, lower, more careful.

“Dale, I want you to listen to me. What happens in this booth is between you and God. The sensors, the scores, the algorithms, those are the court’s business. But the sacrament is mine. And I will protect it. Do you understand?”

“I understand. But understanding doesn’t change the fact that if I score below forty three times, I go to prison.”

The silence that followed was the longest of Dale’s life.

The third week, Dale scored a sixty-one.

The fourth week, fifty-eight.

Keisha showed him the numbers with the same neutral expression she used for everything, the same expression she had been trained to use in the motivational interviewing seminars the county sent its case managers to twice a year.

“You’re trending down,” she said. “I just want to make sure you’re aware.”

“I’m aware.”

“Is there anything going on? Anything you want to talk about?”

Dale looked at her. Keisha was thirty-two, sharp, compassionate, and exhausted in the particular way that social workers in rural Georgia were exhausted: by caseloads that were double what they should be, by software systems that crashed every other Tuesday, by the daily friction of trying to help people inside institutions that were not designed for helping.

“Keisha, can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Do you believe in this? The Sincerity Index? The biometric monitoring?”

She paused. It was a real pause, not a therapeutic one.

“I believe in accountability,” she said carefully. “I believe that people in recovery need structure. I believe that the court has a legitimate interest in knowing whether participants are engaging genuinely with the program.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

She looked at her tablet, then back at him.

“Off the record?”

“Sure.”

“I think GRACE is a tool. Like any tool, it can be used well or badly. I think the developers believe in it. I think Judge Anniston believes in it. I think the data from the first cohort was, honestly, promising. People who scored higher on the Sincerity Index had lower recidivism rates at six months.”

“Correlation isn’t causation. I learned that in my one semester of community college.”

Keisha almost smiled. “No, it isn’t. But in this line of work, you take what you can get.”

“And if the tool is wrong? If it’s measuring something other than what it thinks it’s measuring?”

“Then we adjust. That’s how systems work. They’re imperfect and then they get better.”

“And what happens to the people who get ground up while the system is getting better?”

Keisha closed her tablet. She looked at him with an expression that was, for one unguarded moment, entirely human.

“That,” she said, “is the question I ask myself every single day.”

The fifth Thursday, Dale did not go to the booth.

He drove to Adairsville instead. He parked on the street outside Maggie’s house, the house that had been their house once, the house where Clara had taken her first steps and said her first word, which was “no,” which seemed fitting. He sat in his truck, which was not his truck but a loaner from his brother, because his own truck had been impounded after the fourth DUI and sold at auction.

He did not go to the door. He just sat there. He watched the light in Clara’s upstairs window. He thought about calling, but he did not call. He thought about what he would say if he did call, and he could not think of anything that wasn’t already ruined by all the times he had said similar things before and not followed through.

At 4:47 PM, his phone buzzed. It was an automated message from the ARC system: MR. REEVES, YOU MISSED YOUR SCHEDULED CONFESSIONAL SESSION TODAY AT 3:00 PM. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR CASE MANAGER TO RESCHEDULE. FAILURE TO ATTEND SCHEDULED SESSIONS MAY RESULT IN A COMPLIANCE REVIEW.

He stared at the message. Then he looked up at Clara’s window. The light went off. She was probably going downstairs for dinner. Maggie made spaghetti on Thursdays. She had always made spaghetti on Thursdays.

Dale started the truck and drove back to Cartersville.

The compliance review was held the following Wednesday in Courtroom B, which was also the cathedral’s nave on Sundays, which meant that Dale stood before Judge Anniston under a vaulted ceiling painted with angels.

Judge Anniston was sixty-four, silver-haired, and had the bearing of a man who had spent his entire career trying to balance the law’s demand for consequence with his own stubbornly human belief that people were more than the worst thing they had ever done. He had started the treatment court fifteen years ago. He had watched it evolve from a modest diversion program into the bewildering hybrid it was now: part courtroom, part chapel, part clinic, part panopticon.

“Mr. Reeves, you missed your confessional session last Thursday. You’ve also shown a declining Sincerity Index over the past four weeks. Your case manager has flagged you for non-compliance. I want to hear from you before I make a decision.”

Dale stood at the podium. His public defender, a young woman named Allison Park, stood beside him. She had advised him to apologize, to say he had been overwhelmed, to express recommitment to the program. This was good legal advice. It was the advice any competent attorney would give.

“Your Honor,” Dale said, “I have a question.”

Judge Anniston raised his eyebrows. “Go ahead.”

“If I stand in that booth and I say the most honest thing I’ve ever said, and the machine gives it a fifty-eight, and then I stand in that booth and I say what I think the machine wants to hear, and the machine gives it a ninety-two, which one is the real confession?”

The courtroom was quiet.

“Mr. Reeves, the Sincerity Index is one metric among several. It is not the sole determinant of your compliance.”

“But it’s the one that flagged me. The drug tests have been clean. I’ve been to every group session. I’ve met with Keisha every week. The only thing that’s out of compliance is that a computer thinks I’m not sorry enough.”

“The system detected a pattern of declining physiological engagement, which is consistent with, yes, with emotional withdrawal from the process.”

“Or consistent with a man who is so aware of being measured that he can’t feel anything real anymore.”

Judge Anniston leaned back. He looked at Dale for a long time. Then he looked at Allison Park, who wisely said nothing.

“Mr. Reeves, I’m going to give you one more week. I want you to attend your Thursday session. I want you to engage with the process. And I want you to understand that this court, this program, exists because the alternative is prison. I don’t want to send you to prison. But I need you to meet me halfway.”

“Halfway to where, Your Honor?”

“Halfway to something that looks like accountability.”

Dale heard the word looks and felt it settle in his gut like a stone. Not accountability. Something that looked like it. Even Judge Anniston, the decent one, the one who claimed to believe he was capable of change, was asking him to perform.

On Thursday, Dale went to the booth. He sat down. He put his palm on the galvanic pad. He looked at the latticed screen and saw the shadow of Father Paul on the other side.

“I almost didn’t come,” Dale said.

“I know. I heard about the review.”

“Then you know I’m one bad score from prison.”

“I know.”

“You know where I was, the Thursday I didn’t come?” Dale said. “I drove to Adairsville. I parked outside the house that used to be mine and I watched Clara’s window. I watched the light go off when she went down for dinner. I didn’t knock. I didn’t call. I sat there in my brother’s truck like a man staking out his own family.”

Father Paul said nothing, but Dale felt him listening.

Dale closed his eyes. He could feel his pulse in his fingertips, pressing against the pad. He imagined GRACE interpreting that pulse: elevated heart rate, consistent with anxiety, possible indicator of defensive posture, deducting points from sincerity.

“I want to tell you something,” Dale said, “but I need to know first. Is there any way, any way at all, that what I say in here gets to the court?”

“No. The audio is not recorded. I will never share what you say. The seal is absolute.”

“But the biometrics, the biometrics go to the court.”

“The biometrics go to GRACE. GRACE generates a score. The score goes to your file. That is the system. I did not design it. I do not endorse it. But I cannot stop it.”

“So the court can’t hear my words, but it can hear my body.”

“Yes.”

“And my body is a liar, Father. My body has been lying for twenty years. My body learned to hold steady when I was drunk, learned to smile when I was falling apart, learned to pass for sober when I was anything but. And now the machine wants my body to tell the truth, and my body doesn’t know how. My body only knows how to perform.”

Father Paul was silent for a moment.

“Then don’t speak to the machine,” he said. “Speak to me.”

“You’re behind the same screen the machine is behind.”

“No. The machine is above you. I am beside you. There is a difference.”

Dale opened his eyes. He looked at the screen. He could see Father Paul’s profile: the broad forehead, the thick brows, the still, patient posture of a man who had sat in the dark with more pain than Dale could imagine and had not flinched.

“I don’t know if I can get sober,” Dale said. “I’ve been saying I can for ten years, and I keep ending up in the same place. And the program, the steps, the groups, the confessions, they all assume that somewhere inside me there’s a version of Dale Reeves who wants to live differently. And I used to believe that. I used to think he was in there, hiding, waiting for the right moment. But now I think maybe he’s not. Maybe there’s just this. Just a man who is afraid and tired and who will probably drink again and who will probably hurt his daughters again and who is sitting in a box trying to convince a computer that he feels bad about it.”

His voice broke on the last word. He felt the tears come, not dramatically, not cinematically, but the way tears actually come: reluctantly, stupidly, without permission.

“That’s not a confession,” he said, wiping his face. “That’s just, I don’t know what that is.”

“That,” Father Paul said quietly, “is the most honest thing you’ve said in this booth.”

“The machine won’t think so.”

“The machine is not God.”

“No. But the machine is the court. And the court is the thing that decides whether I sleep in a bed or a cell.”

Father Paul was quiet for a very long time. When he spoke, his voice was different. Not softer, exactly. More deliberate. Like a man choosing each word the way a surgeon chooses instruments.

“Dale, I want you to stay here for a moment. I want you to sit in the quiet. Don’t speak. Don’t perform. Don’t think about the number. Just be here.”

Dale sat. The booth was dark. He could hear the hum of GRACE above him, the faint electronic murmur of a system that was, even now, in this moment, reading his pulse, his sweat, his breath, and translating his humanity into data.

He sat in the dark and he breathed. He thought about Clara. He thought about the Chevron station. He thought about the kitchen floor and the phone ringing. He thought about Maggie making spaghetti on Thursdays. He thought about the gargoyle cameras on the east entrance and the stained glass on the west entrance and the hand sanitizer on the south entrance and how all three doors led to the same building.

He sat there for five minutes. He said nothing.

When he finally spoke, he said: “Father, I am sorry for the harm I have caused. I don’t know if I can fix it. I don’t know if I can stop. But I am sorry. And I am here.”

“That is enough,” Father Paul said. “That has always been enough.”

After Dale left the booth, Father Paul sat alone in the dark for a long time.

Then he stood up. He walked out of the confessional and through the nave, past the pews that served as courtroom gallery on Mondays and Wednesdays and cathedral seating on Sundays and group therapy chairs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. He walked down the hall to the small office that had been designated the GRACE monitoring station. It was a converted sacristy. The stone walls still held the iron brackets where vestments had once hung.

The monitoring station had a single terminal. The screen showed Dale’s session data: a timeline of biometric readings, a waveform of vocal stress patterns, and at the bottom, in large blue numerals, the Sincerity Index for the session.

Forty-one.

One point above the flag threshold. But Father Paul knew what the number meant in context. Dale’s previous scores had been seventy-three, sixty-one, fifty-eight. The pattern was clear. Another session or two like this and GRACE would generate the third flag. The compliance review would follow. And then prison.

Forty-one. For the most honest confession Father Paul had heard in thirty years of priesthood. Forty-one for a man who had finally stopped performing and simply been present in his own wreckage. Forty-one because the algorithm interpreted silence as disengagement, interpreted tears as stress rather than surrender, interpreted the long quiet minutes of genuine human reckoning as a flat affect score, a failure to produce the expected physiological markers of contrition.

The machine was not wrong, exactly. It was measuring what it was built to measure. But what it was built to measure was not what had happened in that booth. What had happened in that booth was a mystery, the kind of mystery that the church had always called grace: unearned, unmerited, unmeasurable. A man sitting in the dark, not knowing whether he could change, and choosing to be sorry anyway.

Father Paul looked at the terminal. He looked at the number. He thought about Judge Anniston, who was a decent man trapped in a system that demanded metrics. He thought about Keisha Mobley, who was a good social worker asking the right questions in a building that could not hear them. He thought about the developers of GRACE, who were probably well-intentioned people who believed that technology could solve the ancient problem of the human heart.

He thought about Dale’s daughter, Clara, turning off her bedroom light in Adairsville.

Then Father Paul sat down at the terminal. He navigated to the session record. He selected the biometric file. And he deleted it.

The system prompted: CONFIRM DELETION OF SESSION DATA? THIS ACTION CANNOT BE UNDONE AND MAY CONSTITUTE A VIOLATION OF BARTOW COUNTY ARC PROTOCOL 7.3(b).

He pressed CONFIRM.

The screen went blank, then refreshed. Where Dale’s session had been, there was now a gap: a missing entry, a hole in the record, an absence where the system expected data.

Father Paul logged out. He stood up. He straightened his collar. He walked back through the nave, under the painted angels, past the pews that were everything to everyone, and he returned to the booth.

He sat in the dark. He folded his hands.

The booth was quiet. GRACE hummed above him, waiting for the next session, the next body, the next set of data points to interpret. It was patient, as machines are patient: without will, without mercy, without understanding.

Father Paul thought about what he would say if they asked him why. If the court summoned him, if the protocol violation was flagged, if Judge Anniston looked at him from the bench and demanded an explanation.

He knew what he would say. He had known it before he sat down at the terminal. He had known it, perhaps, since the day he agreed to participate in the program, since the day he first saw the sensors in the booth and understood what they meant, understood that the state had found a way to quantify the one thing that, by its very nature, could not be quantified.

Mercy cannot be entered into evidence.

He sat in the dark and he waited.

On Friday morning, Keisha Mobley opened Dale’s file and saw the missing session entry. She stared at it for a long time. She looked at the gap where the Sincerity Index should have been, the blank space in the record, the absence.

She thought about calling the IT department. She thought about filing an incident report. She thought about Protocol 7.3(b) and what it required and what it meant and who it was supposed to protect.

Then she thought about Dale Reeves, sitting in her office, asking her if she believed in this. And she thought about her own answer, the careful, professional answer she had given, the one about tools and systems and adjustment. And she thought about the other answer, the one she had not given, the one that lived in the part of her that had become a social worker not because she believed in systems but because she believed in people, which was harder, and less fundable, and did not fit on a flowchart.

Keisha closed the file. She typed a note in the session log: TECHNICAL ERROR. DATA NOT CAPTURED. SESSION WILL BE RESCHEDULED.

She did not know whether this was the right thing to do. She did not know whether it was ethical or legal or defensible. She knew only that somewhere in the gap between the system and the person, there was a space that had to be protected, a space where a man could sit in the dark and say I don’t know if I can stop but I am sorry and have that be enough.

She closed her laptop. She picked up the phone and called Dale Reeves to schedule his next appointment. Outside her window, the building stood in the October light, its three entrances open, its gargoyle cameras watching, its stained glass casting colors on the floor that shifted and changed with the hour and the angle of the sun, and could not, despite everything, be measured.
